Letter #7: Submitted 1-10-99

With the New Year here and the millenium due next year, 1 think it is appropriate to discuss the current power of the U.S. military. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union there is only one superpower left: the United States. The U.S. Army is the strongest Army in the world. It is unopposed. It has unlimited economic resources.

1 feel the U.S. Army is too powerful. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The U.S. Army is getting away with murder. It has both biological and chemical weapons. It opposes the ban on land mines. It feels that it is the policeman of the world. It intervenes in the war in Bosnia and attacks Iraq when lraq does not comply with its demands.

What is there to check the power of the U.S. military establishment? It is difficult to attack something that is so well fortified. Long ago Dwight Eisenhower warned us against the military-industrial complex, and he was a general. Congress continues to appropriate money for the military, but rarely investigates it. I am sure there are plenty of things more important to investigate in the military than in the Clinton presidency.

The Republican Party has always had a cozy relationship with the military. l wouldn't be surprised if some generals were behind the attacks on Clinton because they resent that Clinton dodged the draft during the Viet Nam War.

The U.S. Army is harassing and trying to kill me. l was one of their own officers. Whenever I try to have congressmen and senators investigate my predicament, the Army stonewalls.

Perhaps in the future European countries will unite militarily as they have economically (the Euro). A European army could counterbalance the American Army. After all, Europeans are old hands at war. They have fought wars far longer than Americans have.
