In the novel Coma Robin Cook's heroine is a female medical student who discovers a plot led by the Chief of Surgery at her medical school to kill surgery patients and sell their organs for transplant. When the surgeon learns she knows, he attempts to kill her.
I wonder how many female physicians have died needlessly at Northwestern University Medical School. The female death rate there seems very high to me. I think someone should investigate it.
Dr. Loyal Davis, a neurosurgeon and Ronald Reagan's father-in-law, was Chief of Surgery at Passavant Hospital, an affiliate of Northwestern Medical School, for many years. I visited him in April, 1981 at his home in Phoenix, Arizona where he was living in retirement. He had learned earlier the same day I visited him that he had metastatic cancer. When I arrived at his house, he had a large bandage on his left ear. His demented wife was living with him. They had a full-time live-in nurse staying at their home.
I had met Dr. Davis when I was a junior medical student on the Passavant surgical service. When I made rounds with him, he gave me his neurological kit to carry for him. Dr. Davis had always had a mean, nasty reputation among Northwestern medical students. They retaliated by telling indigent unmarried women of color to name their newborn infants Loyal Davis. In her autobiography Nancy, Nancy Reagan likens her stepfather Loyal Davis to Iago.
When I complained to Dr. Davis of the harassment I was experiencing at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, he told me I was "paranoid." He said women don't belong in the Army. He told me to go work in a small town, but that I wouldn't like that any better. He had worked in Galesburg, Illinois after medical school before his surgical training. He didn't like Galesburg.
When I returned to duty at Tripler after my visit to see Dr. Davis, the harassment escalated. Instead of just whistling and crude verbal noises, I was subjected to finger drumming, pen clicking, and overflights of noisy, unmarked twin engine planes every time I entered and exited Tripler Hospital.
As proof of my visit to Dr. Davis, I provide two letters from him to me:
I believe that Dr. Loyal Davis, Ronald Reagan, and certain Army and Mayo Clinic physicians are responsible for orchestrating my noise harassment. Their excuse is that they do not "trust me." If what they are doing to me is right, why are they keeping it secret?
